More than a century ago, our ancestors left Bihar for Mauritius. They brought very little with them, but they brought a way of living: grinding spices on a stone, cooking over a wood fire, keeping a small corner of the home for prayer, growing vegetables behind the house.
Everything you see at Heritage Spice House grew from those habits.
Going back to where it began
This November, we are going back. We will walk the villages of Bihar and see how those same traditions are lived today.
Then we will travel to Kashmir and Jaipur, looking for traditional pieces that carry the same history, to bring home to the house.
The other half of the story
Everything in our museum has a twin somewhere on the other shore. Our grandmother’s charcoal iron, the grinding stone, the brass scales, the prayer corner.
We want to find them still in use, and bring back what we see. So that when you visit, you can see both sides of the story.
We reopen on 17 November
The house is closed from Sunday 25 October to Monday 16 November. We reopen on Tuesday 17 November, and bookings for our return are already open.
Come and hear what we found.
We reopen on Tuesday 17 November
