What’s Inside

The Heritage Spice House Experience

One visit, six parts. A museum of everyday objects, the ancestral kitchen, the living gardens, the volcanic grinding stone, the tasting table — and the spice route that brought all of it to this island.

How a visit works

It runs in one continuous thread

Nothing here is a separate ticket or a separate room you queue for. You arrive, and someone from the family walks you through it in order — objects first, then the garden, then the stone, then the food that the stone made. The whole thing takes about an hour and a half, or thirty minutes if you are only passing.

The six parts

Everything you will see and do

Heritage museum objects at Heritage Spice House

Heritage Museum

One room of ordinary objects kept for three generations — the charcoal iron, the brass scales, the kerosene lanterns — and what they tell you about how Mauritian families actually lived.

Grinding spices on the ross cari stone

Traditional Spice Grinding

The ross cari is volcanic stone and a heavy roller. We show you the movement, then step back. Everybody grinds, and what you grind goes into what you taste.

Living gardens at Heritage Spice House, Riambel

Living Gardens

The spice nursery, the vegetable alley, the plants that were also the medicine cabinet, and the cane at the edge of the property that explains the rest of it.

Traditional Mauritian food tasting

Mauritian Food Tasting

Traditional dishes cooked with the masala ground that morning, eaten the way Mauritian families eat — sitting down together, small bowls, everything shared.

The spice route experience

Mauritius & the Spice Route

Why an island with no native spices became a spice island. The sea road, the plants that were smuggled here, and the four migrations that filled the Mauritian spice cupboard.

Mauritian cooking class at Heritage Spice House

Mauritian Cooking Class

The evening version, by reservation. You grind, you cook a full Mauritian meal with us, and then we all sit down and eat it together.

★★★★★
“As a Mauritian, I discovered new things about our own culture that is slightly being lost. I truly felt as if I had stepped back in time.”
